family

I've always said you don't need blood to be family. There are more people I consider family that I don't share blood ties with than I do. Which is to say, most of the people I'm tied to through blood are practically strangers to me. I've seen the inside of their homes but I don't know their middle names or how they lost their virginity or why they have to knock their knees every time someone hiccups.

Without that type of knowledge, you don't have a right to call someone family. Blood or not. It just seems wrong. So, when I refer to my dad or my aunt or my uncle by such names, it's simply so people know who the hell I'm talking about. But I don't actually see any of the people in those "roles" as those terms. They are people who know/knew my mom.

That might sound sad but here's the thing: I do have family. It just isn't typical. My family consists of my mom, my cats and a few friends who've stuck around despite my horrible personality. Really, it's pretty bad - at least some of the time. Anyway, most people have horrible personalities [some of the time].

Family, to me, is the group of people who stick around through the crap because it's part of who you are and they don't mind it [much]. Plain ol' friends are people who only like to be around you when you're having fun (nothing wrong with that, they just aren't family). Family lets you leak snot all over their favorite shirt, sings really badly in the car with you, listens to your mindless ranting, mindless rants back at you, rescues you in the middle of the night, always answers the phone. Family doesn't just get tired of you and disappear.

I enjoyed reading that. Though I don't concur with the views completely as such... I thought. Sat and thought. Posts that make you think have to be good :P

I just read some of your poetry. A woman obsessed, paroxysm, life and entwined. You've got evident talent. And you can even convey your general thoughts so smoothly, with such ease, as I came to realised from a few of your entries. I think they were bisexual, monogomy and virginity.

awesome blog
